The Design Genius of Robert Trent Jones Senior Symposium

To be held via Zoom on four consecutive Wednesdays March 15 – April 5th, 2023

Participation is limited to RTJ Society members.

Dave Leigh, The RTJ Society Marketing Chairperson will moderate a four evening discussion on “The Design Genius of Robert Trent Jones Senior” highlighting design characteristics of RTJ courses and Jones’s unique contribution to worldwide golf course design. Sessions will include videotaped interviews with his sons Bobby and Rees, Roger Rulewich and other contributors. Your club members are invited to sign up and participate via Zoom for four consecutive Wednesday nights beginning  March 15th. Sessions will be held at 9pm EST to accommodate participation across all time zones.

Additionally, participants will be encouraged to offer insight on their Member Courses, and to delve deeper into the history of RTJ. New insights will help member courses appreciate their design features and extend conversation onto the course and into the grill room.

Session 1:

Overview of Design Principals

  • Historical context of golf course design
  • Impact of RTJ within the historical timeline
  • Homework assignment: Identify course components at member clubs

Session 2-3:

RTJ Contributions to Design (supported by designer video interviews)

  • Discuss routing, green complexes, bunkering, water hazards, multivariant tees, etc.
  • Show and breakdown specific examples from members and famous RTJ holes

Session 4:

Review of RTJ’s Legacy

  • Summation, likely list of examples to be used in the Society’s design principals brochure
  • Homework assignment: Schedule internal club meeting to discuss symposium findings
