West Point Golf Course
West Point Golf Course – Orange County, NY
Year Opened: 1948
Golf Program Manager: Steven Whipple
Website: West Point Golf Course
The course opened in 1948 as a part of the Army Athletic Association. Only 10 holes were originally completed with the remaining holes completed several years after. In 1997, the course was renovated and opened to the public. In 2006 our par 4 5th green was re-constructed with the help of the RJTII company, returning the complex to a Robert Trent Jones themed design. A new clubhouse is currently under construction.
German Prisoners of War, housed at West Point during WWII, assisted with Jones’ construction of the course. Ballast sand from Liberty ships was used as part of the greens construction mix. Currently the home of the D1 Army West Point Golf Team, WPGC hosts intercollegiate play and The Army/Navy Star Match every two years. Each tee contains information about the nation’s history and the contributions U.S. Military Academy graduates. We have hosted play by Presidents, numerous Generals and dignitaries.
Located in the Hudson Highlands, the WPGC contains dramatic elevation changes. Robert Trent Jones recognized the special qualities of this location, and used existing contours to highlight the beauty of the surrounding landscape. He carved the golf course to allow for risk/reward shots while providing breathtaking vistas. These features can be seen throughout the property and particularly on holes 3, 4 and 8.
